A School Visit to: High Tech Elementary

Thanks to a generous grant from the LCEEQ  , I've had the opportunity to go on a tour of school visits.  Myself, our school principal, our  PYP coordinator and  one of our grade 3 teachers all traveled to San Diego to visit exemplary schools focusing on Project-Based Learning.   I learned so much from this school visit, but for the sake of brevity, I'll focus on 3 major ah-ha moments that I plan on implementing as soon as I get back to my school!

The PYP Exhibition

What is the PYP Exhibition?

In their final year of elementary school ,  PYP students take on a substantial, cross-curricular, collaborative project called the Exhibition.   In teams of 3, 4 or 5, students create their own unit of inquiry based on a subject that they are passionate about. They create the central idea, the lines of inquiry, they use all attitudes and attributes of the learner profile  to showcase what they have learned in this process, and in their years of experience in the PYP.

Passionate about Project-Based Learning!

About a year ago, after watching the movie Most Likely to Succeed, I became super interested in Project-Based Learning (PBL). I saw what  High Tech High's students were capable of, and I knew I wanted my students to experience the same level of growth, confidence, and  passion. This led me to  applying for (and receiving!) a grant to visit that school, along with a few others, who specialize in PBL. At the same time, I got the news that I would be teaching grade 6 this year- the year our students carry out the PYP exhibition.

It's like it was all meant to be.

Why inquiry?

Teaching is very demanding work. Teachers have an increasing amount of responsibility in an ever-changing world. Hence, professionals in the field must seek and select the best research-based practices in order to effectively reach and teach all students. For example, with a growing to-do list, some teachers may believe they do not need to provide for gifted students, as they will no doubt succeed academically. In addition, it is important to remember that at the moment, there is no legislation protecting gifted students in Quebec education. However, many educators know it is essential to nourish and challenge our gifted and talented students, yet lack the knowledge or time to find cost-efficient and easy-to-implement strategies to empower teachers with. Therefore, the real challenge is to find a way to meet the needs of gifted and talented students, spread this information to teachers, all without adding to a teacher’s workload.
