One thing in particular motivated me to change my system - ClassDojo recently launched a series of amazing videos talking about growth mindset. The 5 part series follows the dynamic story of a few familiar avatars as they learn about the brain and growth mindset. I gave the ClassDojo a week trial period in my class, and it's been getting rave reviews! Here's a little bit more information before you buy-in to this system too!
Part 1 / 5 : A Secret About the Brain
What is ClassDojo?
Yes, points are fun, but at one point (ha) kids may need more to stay motivated. As I transferred my classroom management system to ClassDojo, my students were used to the rewards I had integrated (and so was I). I have 5 rewards to choose from.
It's very important to me to not pick material rewards like stickers or pencils or little toys. I don't like material rewards for a few reasons: kids grow tired of the toys you have, and they also want more, bigger better; I just can't get myself to Dollarama as often as I need to; is it part of my job to be buying treats for my students?
All this to say, here are the rewards I offer:
Here's how I manage this:
On Fridays, we tabulate points.
Every 30 points buys you one reward.
If the whole class gets above 500 points for the week, they get to choose a reward for the whole class (extra long recess, play time with iPads for everyone, etc).
On Monday mornings, I reset the point bubbles and we start fresh!
So far, my students, student parents and myself have only positive remarks...how has your experience been using this program? What are potential barriers you might face to implementing this program in your class? Do you use something similar, better or worse?
what are your experiences using this program?
